Tooth Extractions

The process of removing a tooth from your mouth is called a dental extraction or a tooth extraction. The most common ailment leading to a dental extraction being required is if one of your teeth is damaged beyond practical repair.

Here is a short list of the most common reasons for extractions:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • Advanced gum disease may cause the tooth to be extracted due to the chance of damaging the supporting tissue and bone structure in your mouth
  • Relevant to orthodontic work, teeth may need be extracted if your mouth needs room for the teeth that are being moved to their proper place
  • Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted either before or after they come in

What to expect

Dr. Stan Eisenberg or Dr. Cindy Bogdanoff will first administer anesthesia to numb the surrounding area around the tooth needing extraction. This greatly reduces discomfort and while you’ll still feel the pressure of the tooth being removed, you won’t be in any pain. Most teeth are extracted in a matter of minutes.

Once the tooth is removed, it’s normal for some bleeding to occur over the next 24 hours. Follow the team at Atlanta Smiles’ directions for properly caring for your mouth. They’ll provide you with instructions on how often to clean and change your gauze as well as other post-procedure steps to follow.

Do you have a tooth that needs to be removed? If so, don’t wait any longer. The consequences far outweigh the slight discomfort you’ll feel during the procedure. Give your Atlanta dental practice a call today at (252) 651-4419 or visit our appointment request page here.
