Dry Mouth

Everyone, at some time or another, experiences dry mouth, It can happen when you are nervous, upset or under stress.  But if you have a dry mouth all or a lot of the time, it cannot only be uncomfortable-it can have serious consequences for your health. That’s because saliva does more than just keep the mouth wet.  It helps digest food, projects teeth form decay, prevents infection by controlling bacteria and fungi in the mouth, and, it makes it possible for you to chew and swallow. Without enough saliva you can develop tooth decay or other infections in the mouth.

A decreased saliva rate leads to changes in PH and increased bacterial attacks on the vulnerable portions of teeth, such as exposed roots.  This tends to create odor, pain and left untreated will form rampant destruction of the dental hard structures, which in certain case lead to disfiguring and dangerous bond infectious.  If not caught in time, this situation will render the affected teeth unsalvageable.  Many times, cancer patients and others on a variety of medications have no idea that their complaints of dry mouth, bad breath, lost taste, inability to swallow food easily and oral discomfort can actually cause the additional problems of increased decay on natural teeth and around dental restorations.

At the Atlanta Center of Cosmetic Dentistry we have incorporated protocols to aid our patients this condition and its potential consequences.  By utilizing minimally invasive testing, and with a combination of diet changes (Xylitol lollipops, omission of acids) and regimes of varying acid balance with special fluoride and Xylitol rinses, we are treating the dry mouth syndrome, preserving healthy smiles.
