Everything You Need To Know About Oral Cancer
Hi, my name is Dr. Sunny Patel here at Briarcliff Dental Group, and I wanted to take some time today to talk to you about oral cancer.
What is oral cancer?
Oral cancer is a form of cancer that appears in the head and neck area, specifically the mouth. It can occur in various areas of the mouth, but like other cancers, it can be signified by lumps, bumps, ulcerations, or most commonly, pain.
What causes oral cancer?
Oral cancer can have many causes, but contributing factors include tobacco use, whether it's smokeless or cigarette use. Vaping has been shown to have some impact on the mouth, though not necessarily associated with oral cancer as much as other forms of tobacco or smoke.
The HPV virus is another common link to oral cancer in the mouth, and growing studies indicate that alcohol, in combination with other factors, can contribute to oral cancer in the mouth.
What does oral cancer look like in early stages?
Oral cancer in its early forms can appear as a raised lump or bump. Typical signs can also include erosion or ulceration in the mouth. Bleeding in areas that should not be bleeding, or thickening of areas that start to feel very firm and fibrous, can also resemble rough patches in the mouth.
What does an oral cancer screening involve?
An oral cancer screening in our office typically involves our dentist or doctor examining high-risk areas or areas where oral cancer is most commonly found. The floor of the mouth underneath the tongue, the lateral borders of the tongue, and the soft palate towards the back of the mouth are three areas that we examine. A thorough visual examination and palpation by a doctor is the best way for us to identify any oral cancer symptoms or signs in the mouth.
What are the current treatment options for oral cancer?
Early detection is extremely important when discussing oral cancer. Oral cancer can be treated in various ways, from minor surgery to more extensive surgeries for later-diagnosed or more aggressive cases. Some surgeries can be very minor and not change the overall composition of the mouth. However, early detection is crucial to limit the post-surgical nature of healing.
